Over at Blue Collar Philosophy, Todd recently posted about sunspots...or the lack thereof and what this lack of sunspots could mean. Todd cites a Washington Post article on the topic. An anonymous commenter left this comment,
[It] actually is NOT good.. the [Mayans] and other groups of people how used astronomy to tell the future completely accurately believe that our solar system ends on [December] 21, 2012... you can read about this in the book Apolyon Rising 2012...This is also why the [Islamists] are hell bent on working as fast as they can to conquer the world for [Islam] before this end date. (Corrections in []s.)This is definitely a part of the popular culture as well as the church culture...trying to figure out the end of the world. Many from our society are fixated on trying to figure out when the world will end. In the theological realm, this translates into trying to figure out when Christ will come again.
Many have tried, all have failed. On the theological side, people look to the Bible for clues...mainly relying on Daniel and Revelation. But this is inconsistent with Biblical Truth.
[Jesus said,] "But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. As were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left. Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. (Matthew 24:36-44, emphasis mine)I might be wrong in saying I'm not going to worry about the sun or about the Mayan Calendar. I might be wrong to not take people like Hal Lindsey seriously. The Mayan Calendar and Hal Lindsey are not God the Father. They do not know.
And even if they are right...that changes nothing. As a baptized child of God and because of Christ's death and glorious resurrection, I have the assurance of eternal life.
I agree with Todd here, I'm not going to lose any sleep over this.
If those claiming to be Christians are truly saved then they do not have anything to worry about. I have seen people parse that verse saying that it does not speak about the year so that may be possible known. I think the description Jesus gives about the moral conditions before His return are more telling. The kinds of sins during Noah's time are back in full force, and rampant homosexuality may have even been there as well. Interesting times no matter what happens.
